Le roi et la reine se morfondent de ne pas avoir d’enfant. Un jour, une grenouille apparaît et annonce: « Ton vœu sera exaucé, avant un an, tu mettras une fille au monde ». La prédiction de la grenouille se réalise, la reine donne naissance à l’enfant tant désiré. Le roi organise une grande fête pour célébrer l’événement et y invite toutes les fées du pays. Mais une méchante fée que l’on avait oubliée arrive et jette un sort à la petite princesse : « À quinze ans, tu te piqueras à un fuseau et tu tomberas morte ».
