Les métamorphoses

Golden Legend, Legend of the Ages, Bible or genius of paganism, here is a work which, in twelve thousand verses, tells two hundred and thirty-one stories of metamorphosis; many of them go back to the very origin of the world. Ovid, in his epic and didactic poems, gave us—from the beginnings down to Julius Caesar—one of the great texts on the genesis of humanity. The variety of styles, ranging from horror and the fantastic to amorous elegy, delights the reader as much as The Thousand and One Nights. The grandeur of imperial Rome, of the Western Empire, is reflected in it. The Metamorphoses are one of the principal sources of Western literature and art. Like the fountains of Rome from which water never ceases to flow, the Metamorphoses are at once a monument and a wellspring of European culture.
